We rarely have to worry about freezing pipes however [...]]]> Almost every home insurance  policy contains a little-known exclusion that states “…water damage caused by freezing (pipes) is NOT COVERED if you are away from home for FOUR CONSECUTIVE DAYS or longer UNLESS you have drained the plumbing OR arranged for someone to check the house daily”……

We rarely have to worry about freezing pipes however the recent cold spell hitting Vancouver could be a concern. If you go on vacation and your furnace breaks down, your pipes could freeze and burst (we’ve seen it happen). So make sure you have someone checking your house daily (some insurance policies only require checks every three days) to make sure the heat is being maintained in the house, or drain your plumbing, which is a bit of a hassle but not nearly as difficult as cleaning up a flooded, frozen basement.
