FIRE!
On September 21/24 around midnight, we experienced a fire at our office. The tenant below us (a restaurant) had an electrical fire caused by a faulty extension cord. Luckily, the fire alarm was set off and the Fire Dept quickly responded and put out the fire.
Unfortunately, our rear door and front window was forced open by the firefighters. We had smoke damage in our office and the electrical power in the entire building was shut off as a precaution. The tenant below suffered extensive damage. At 3am, we had our door and window temporarily secured. The rest of the week we had Insurance Adjusters, Restoration and cleaning companies working to get us back on track.
UPDATE: March 2025 – our door was replaced in late October and our front window was replaced in January. We were fortunate to continue operating as normal.
We did not use our own insurance since our damage is well under our deductible. Our landlord’s insurance paid for the door and window and some cleaning.
This isn’t the first time we’ve suffered a loss – we had the gas explosion next door in 2008 and B&E’s and other small losses in the past. But this is a good reminder to be prepared for the worse and review your insurance regularly.
